A Living Laboratory on the Ridge
Opaeula Ridge was Lonohana’s first bold step into building a regenerative agroforestry system for cacao in Hawai‘i. Fifteen years ago, this hillside orchard became our testing ground, our classroom, and our compass. Every season brought new lessons, new challenges, and more than a few mistakes that shaped who we are today.
It may be a small orchard, but it has been one of our greatest teachers. The work we did here laid the foundation for everything that followed, guiding our approach as we expanded to Waialua and continued refining what sustainable cacao farming can look like in the islands.
Crafted With Care, From Harvest to Fermentation
Production at Opaeula Ridge is intentionally small and deeply personal. Our farm team harvests and ferments every cacao pod on site, allowing the orchard’s unique character to stay fully intact.
Because everything happens right there on the ridge, the chocolate carries the unmistakable imprint of its place: the season’s weather, the timing of each harvest, the nuances of fermentation. Every batch is a snapshot of a moment in time, resulting in chocolate that is truly one of a kind.
A Distinct Hawaiian Origin
Opaeula Ridge is the only cacao grown within the ahupua‘a of Pa‘ala‘a, making it a completely distinct origin in the Hawaiian Islands. Its flavor profile cannot be replicated anywhere else, and its story is inseparable from the land that nurtures it.
Chocolate That Lets the Land Speak
The chocolate from Opaeula Ridge is more than a product. It is a translation of place. Every bar begins in a landscape that has shaped us for more than fifteen years, and every step of its journey preserves the voice of this small but powerful orchard.
Because all harvesting and fermentation happen right on the ridge, nothing is lost along the way. The fruit is never blended with cacao from other regions, never transported offsite, never separated from the conditions that shaped it. The result is chocolate that carries the orchard’s full identity: the weather of the season, the rhythm of the harvest, the subtle shifts in fermentation that only happen in this specific microclimate.
Opaeula Ridge is the only cacao grown within the ahupua‘a of Pa‘ala‘a, which makes it a truly singular origin in the Hawaiian Islands. Its flavor cannot be replicated, even by our own team, anywhere else. It is an estate in the truest sense of the word: a defined place with a defined character, expressed honestly through the cacao it produces.
To honor that purity, we craft only straightforward dark chocolates from Opaeula Ridge. No inclusions. No embellishments. Nothing to distract from the orchard’s voice. Each bar becomes a reflection of the land itself, shaped by the regenerative agroforestry system we’ve nurtured here and the lessons we’ve learned season after season.
This is chocolate that tells the story of where it comes from.
A hillside orchard. A distinct Hawaiian ahupua‘a. A decade and a half of learning, tending, and refining.
Opaeula Ridge is our foundation, our teacher, and our reminder that the most extraordinary flavors often come from the most intentional connection to place.
