Waialua farms

The Future of Our Estate

A Place Where Chocolate Begins

Waialua Farms is where the next generation of Lonohana chocolate will take shape. It is a place defined by history, sustained by community, and rooted in the belief that Hawaii-grown cacao can stand among the world’s finest. As the orchard continues to grow and evolve, it will remain central to our mission: to craft chocolate that reflects the land it comes from and the people who steward it.

A Historic Orchard on the North Shore

Waialua Farms sits on land that has shaped the agricultural identity of Oahu’s north shore for generations. Once home to the historic Waialua Sugar Company, these fields have long been part of the region’s story of cultivation, community, and connection to the ʻāina. Today, they enter a new chapter as the largest cacao orchard in Hawaii, now under local stewardship.

151 Acres of Agricultural Legacy

The farm spans 151 acres, with more than 60 acres of mature cacao producing trees; one of the most significant plantings of cacao anywhere in the United States. These trees, established over decades, offer a rare combination of scale, maturity, and terroir. Their deep roots and long history of production make Waialua Farms an extraordinary foundation for Hawaii-grown chocolate.

A Living Orchard Shaping the Future of Hawaiʻi-Grown Cacao

Waialua Farms is an orchard already alive with possibility. With more than 60 acres of mature cacao producing trees, the farm offers immediate impact; trees that are bearing fruit now, ready to be shaped into chocolate with full traceability from tree to bar. This established canopy allows Lonohana to expand production while staying true to its commitment to using exclusively Hawaii-grown cacao, strengthening the foundation of Hawaii’s emerging cacao industry.

As stewardship transitions to Lonohana, the orchard is being guided into a regenerative future. The work underway at Waialua focuses on rebuilding soil health, increasing biodiversity, and restoring the ecological resilience of land once defined by plantation agriculture. These efforts extend the regenerative agroforestry practices pioneered at Opaeula Ridge across a much larger landscape, creating a model for diversified agriculture on the north shore.

Together, these elements: mature trees, regenerative farming, and a fully local supply chain, position Waialua Farms as a cornerstone of Hawaii’s cacao story. It is a place where agricultural history meets long-term stewardship, where cacao can thrive at scale, and where the future of Hawaii-grown chocolate is being written in real time.
